The Fab Five had been forewarned not to stay in the White Wolf Inn in Stratton, Maine, but they ended up getting a room there anyway. They should have heeded the warning because at about 2:30am the saga with the sandal scandal began...
When Barney Fife, one of Stratton's finest, and Ace Ventura, a "forensic expert," knocked on the door because of a supposed break-in at the White Wolf kitchen. They wanted to see Rabbit's sandal because there was a footprint on the door of the kitchen.
Actual photo of the aforementioned crime scene! Supposedly Rabbit had tried to kick in this door to steal some beer. Of course, Rabbit and the Fab Five already had bought some beer, which they had leftover in their room. And they had plenty of cash. And they were all asleep--it being 2:30am and all. So it's unclear what their motive would be to break in.
The investigation continues. Note that the sun has come up--and our Fab Five hiking party has gotten about 3 hours of sleep as of this point. But, hey, when there's nothing else to do in Stratton, Maine, why not invent a major crime spree to keep from being bored! Our Rabbit was kept in the car and interrogated--he is a scruffy looking guy after 2000 miles on the trail!
On the left is "exhibit 2" which shows a print of Rabbit's right sandal print. On the right is actual crime scene imagery showing the perpetrator's imprint from the alleged attempted break-in. (Perhaps this person was wiping the mud off their shoe?) Remember--this is a break-in that apparently didn't happen because I don't think anyone got through these defenses. Of course, Rabbit tried to point out to them that he is kicks with his left foot and that if he really wanted to get in, he would have put on his heavy hiking boots!
Fortunately, after many hours without sleep, the Fab Five defense team managed to convince the police to let Rabbit go! He was told he might have to come back to Maine in a few weeks for a summons, but reason eventually prevailed and Rabbit was cleared! (Not that he was ever arrested, or read his rights, or that there was ever a crime, as far as we can tell!)
Scientifically enlarged image of the famous footprint. Phantom and Rabbit later determined that his sandal had the opposite/backward pattern compared to this print, which they later revealed to the "forensic expert."
So remember...the next time you are visiting the lovely town of Stratton, Maine, be sure to stop by the White Wolf Inn to see the footprint that started the Sandal Scandal. And be sure to wipe your feet before breaking in to closets to steal beer! And most of all, know that you are safe with the protection of Stratton's finest, who are there to make sure you get the best night of sleep possible. Until our next episode...sing along with us: "Bad boys, bad boys...whatcha' gonna do when they come for you!"
